Finger Food Ideas for Company Parties, Parties and Buffets

Guide

Good finger food gets people talking: everyone takes what they like, nobody is tied to a seat, and there is hardly any washing up. Here you will find ideas for your next buffet, guide quantities per person and tips that make planning easy. We have been preparing finger food since 1998 and deliver it in Munich and the surrounding area.

Finger food ideas by type

From classic canapés to desserts in a jar: these types of finger food form the basis of every successful buffet.

Colourfully topped canapés with salmon, Serrano ham, salami and tomato & mozzarella
Classics for receptions

Canapés and bites

Canapés are the calling card of every buffet. Small slices of bread, finely topped with salmon, Serrano ham, cream cheese or tomato & mozzarella, can be eaten in one or two bites without anyone needing a plate or cutlery. That makes them perfect for situations where your guests are standing, holding a glass and getting into conversation.

Complement canapés with warm or heartier bites such as puff pastry pockets, mini quiches or salmon pralines. This adds variety in taste and on the platter. For a champagne reception two or three varieties are often enough; for an evening celebration, plan a wider selection.

Skewers

Skewers are among the most popular finger food ideas because they are clean to eat and immediately bring colour to the platter. The wooden skewer replaces the fork, nobody gets sticky fingers, and hardly anything is left over afterwards.

Popular choices are tomato & mozzarella with basil, Serrano ham with honeydew melon, marinated chicken skewers or vegan antipasti skewers with grilled vegetables. Mix savoury and fruity versions so every guest finds something suitable. Skewers are particularly good for meetings and team events where people eat on the side.

Wraps and mini burgers

At an all-day workshop or a celebration that goes on into the evening, your guests need something filling. Mini wraps and small burgers are ideal: they satisfy hunger but stay handy and can be eaten without cutlery.

Mini wraps come, for example, with BBQ chicken, Asian wok vegetables or vegan with jackfruit. This way you cover different preferences with a single platter. Combine the filling options with lighter bites so the buffet doesn't become too heavy.

Salmon tartare in a preserving jar with avocado cream
Served festively

Finger food in a jar

In a small preserving jar, a starter becomes an elegant bite. Salmon tartare with avocado cream, roast beef, prawn or quinoa look particularly premium in a jar and make an impression on any buffet. Your guests take a jar with a spoon and can move freely around the room.

Finger food in a jar is especially suitable for evening events, company parties and Christmas parties when the buffet replaces dinner. Together with canapés and desserts in a jar, it creates a harmonious, festive overall look.

French petits fours with fruit, mousse and chocolate
The sweet finish

Sweet finger food and desserts

A successful buffet ends on a sweet note. Two or three varieties are enough for every guest to find a little something after the savoury bites. French petits fours look elegant, brownies and mini muffins are easy, and desserts in a jar such as panna cotta or chocolate mousse add a festive touch.

Don't plan the sweets too sparingly: guests like to reach for them, especially in the afternoon or with coffee. For guests with special requirements there are also vegan mini muffins and a vegan dessert selection.

Fruit skewers with pineapple, melon, grapes and physalis
Fresh and light

Fruit

Fruit skewers and fruit platters are the light addition to any buffet. They bring freshness and colour to the table and are especially popular at morning meetings and conferences when nobody wants to eat heavily.

Pineapple, melon, grapes and physalis can be eaten without a knife and go with coffee as well as juice or sparkling wine. A fruit platter is also a good choice if you are expecting guests with different eating habits.

For all guests

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free

More and more guests eat vegetarian or vegan food or cannot tolerate certain ingredients. Instead of picking out individual bites, it is best to plan separate platters for these guests. That way they don't have to ask and can help themselves just as naturally as everyone else.

For this there are dedicated vegetarian and vegan finger food packages, a selection of gluten-free and lactose-free finger food and finger food without pork. Allergen information is shown on each product.

By occasion

Which finger food suits your occasion?

Every occasion has its own requirements. Here is how to make the right choice.

01

Meeting and conference

Light bites, canapés and fruit that can be eaten on the side without putting your documents away.

02

Company party and Christmas party

A mix of bites, finger food in a jar and desserts that replaces dinner.

03

Champagne reception and farewell

A few fine varieties for a toast that fit easily in one hand.

04

Birthday and family celebration

A wide selection for young and old, easiest as a mixed package.

In four steps

Putting together the right selection

01

Clarify the occasion

Does the finger food replace a meal or just accompany a drink? The quantity depends on this.

02

Mix savoury and sweet

3 to 6 savoury and 2 to 3 sweet varieties are enough for most celebrations.

03

Think of all guests

One variety each with meat, with fish and one vegetarian variety cover most preferences.

04

Plan filling options

For longer events, add wraps, mini burgers or finger food in a jar.

Planning quantities

How much finger food per person?

The quantity depends on whether the finger food replaces a meal. These guide values apply to the entire event.

Occasion Pieces per guest
Champagne reception, farewell 5 to 7
Meeting 6 to 8
Workshop 8 to 10
Team event 10 to 12
Conference 10 to 14
Birthday, family celebration 10 to 14
Company party, Christmas party 12 to 16

Rule of thumb for drinks

Plan on about 0.6 litres per guest per hour. If alcohol is served, around 0.2 litres of this will be alcoholic and 0.4 litres non-alcoholic drinks.

The easiest option is ready-made finger food packages, for example the Munich Finger Food Package with salmon pralines, Bavarian canapés and traybake. They also meet the minimum quantity of 3 platters.
